What is Blower Motor?

A blower motor is the electric motor that spins the indoor fan wheel inside an air handler or furnace, pushing air across the evaporator coil or heat exchanger and through the home's ductwork. Types include permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors, which run at fixed speeds, and electronically commutated motors (ECMs), which vary speed and use less electricity.

Why it matters to you

The blower runs every time the system heats, cools or circulates air, which in Greater Houston means most of the year. A weak or failing blower motor cuts airflow, which can freeze the evaporator coil and leave rooms warm even while the outdoor unit runs.

Practical guidance

Signs of trouble include little or no air at the vents, a humming or squealing indoor unit, or a burning smell; turn the system off and call for service. Ask the technician to measure static pressure too, since restrictive ducts and filters make a blower motor work harder.
