What is Condenser Coil?

A condenser coil is the finned outdoor heat exchanger in an air conditioner's condensing unit where hot, high-pressure refrigerant releases heat absorbed from inside the home. The condenser fan pulls outdoor air across the coil's aluminum fins and tubing, and the refrigerant condenses from vapor to liquid as it gives up that heat.

Why it matters to you

Grass clippings, pollen, dirt and dryer lint can mat the fins, and a dirty condenser coil makes the system run at higher pressure and use more electricity through Greater Houston's long cooling season. Cleaning it is a standard step in an AC tune-up.

Practical guidance

Keep grass clippings, leaves and shrubs away from the cabinet, and never bend, scrape or pressure-wash the fins. Chemical coil cleaning and fin straightening belong to a licensed maintenance visit.
