What is Dehumidification?

Dehumidification is the removal of moisture from indoor air, done by an air conditioner's evaporator coil as warm air passes over it and water condenses, or by a dedicated whole-home dehumidifier. Engineers call it latent cooling, as opposed to sensible cooling, which lowers air temperature; comfort in humid climates requires both.

Why it matters to you

In Greater Houston, comfort is about moisture as much as temperature: an oversized or short-cycling AC can reach the thermostat setting before it runs long enough to wring water out of the air, leaving the house cool but clammy. Two-stage and variable-speed systems run longer at lower output, which generally improves moisture removal.

Practical guidance

Keep the indoor fan on AUTO rather than ON during cooling season, because a continuously running fan can re-evaporate water from the wet coil back into the house. If the home stays humid, ask a licensed technician to check airflow, refrigerant charge, and sizing before adding a whole-home dehumidifier.
