What is Refrigerant?

Refrigerant is the fluid sealed inside an air conditioner or heat pump that carries heat out of the home, absorbing it as it evaporates in the indoor coil and releasing it as it condenses in the outdoor coil. It is not consumed in normal operation. Common residential refrigerants include R-22, R-410A, R-32 and R-454B.

Why it matters to you

Your system's refrigerant type shapes repair and replacement decisions during the federal shift away from R-410A. In a Houston summer, when an AC can run most of the day, even a small refrigerant loss shows up quickly as weak cooling — and a system that needs more refrigerant has a leak.

Practical guidance

Find the refrigerant type on the outdoor unit's data plate, usually next to the factory charge — no tools or panel removal needed. Adding, recovering or testing refrigerant requires an EPA Section 608-certified technician; it is never a homeowner task.
