What is R-32?

R-32, or difluoromethane, is a single-component refrigerant used in many new residential air conditioners and heat pumps as a lower-global-warming replacement for R-410A, of which it is already one ingredient. It is classified A2L, meaning lower toxicity and mild flammability, so equipment built for it follows the UL 60335-2-40 safety standard. Goodman's current residential split systems use R-32.

Why it matters to you

If you replace a Greater Houston system with current Goodman split equipment, it will run on R-32, which affects how the new system is installed and serviced for its whole life. R-32 and R-410A cannot be mixed, and an R-32 outdoor unit is generally paired with a matching indoor coil.

Practical guidance

Ask whether a quote's indoor and outdoor components are a matched R-32 pair and how any required refrigerant detection system is installed. Leave refrigerant handling and sensor wiring to a qualified technician.
