What is R-454B?

R-454B is a refrigerant blend of R-32 and R-1234yf used in many new residential air conditioners and heat pumps as a lower-global-warming replacement for R-410A under the EPA's HFC phase-down. It is classified A2L, meaning lower toxicity and mild flammability, and equipment built for it follows the UL 60335-2-40 safety standard.

Why it matters to you

Several manufacturers use R-454B while others, including Goodman's current residential split systems, use R-32, so two Greater Houston replacement quotes may specify different refrigerants. Both are A2L; what matters most is that the indoor and outdoor components are matched and installed to the safety standard.

Practical guidance

Note which refrigerant each quote specifies and confirm the components are a matched set for it. R-454B, R-32 and R-410A are not interchangeable, so every future repair must use the refrigerant listed on the data plate.
