What is Float Switch?

A float switch is a safety device, mounted in an air conditioner's secondary drain pan, the primary drain line, or a condensate pump, that rises with backed-up water and shuts off the cooling system before water overflows. When it trips, the system stops cooling until the drain is cleared and the water level drops.

Why it matters to you

In Houston homes with attic air handlers, the float switch is often the only thing between a clogged drain line and water damage to the ceiling below, so an AC that suddenly shuts off on a humid day may be doing exactly what it should. Repeated trips can also look like short cycling.

Practical guidance

If the AC stops and you see water in the drain pan, switch the system off at the thermostat and call a technician; never bypass, tape down, or remove a float switch to get cooling back. During maintenance, ask whether your system has float switch protection and whether it was tested.
