What is Condensate Drain Line?

A condensate drain line is the pipe, usually PVC, that carries water removed from indoor air by the evaporator coil away from the air handler to a drain, the outdoors, or a condensate pump. Algae, sludge, and debris can clog it, causing water to back up into the drain pan, trip a float switch, or overflow into ceilings.

Why it matters to you

Air conditioners in humid Greater Houston pull a lot of water out of the air, and with many air handlers installed in attics, a clogged drain line can mean a stained or damaged ceiling rather than a puddle in the garage. A clog that trips the float switch is also a frequent reason a system suddenly stops cooling.

Practical guidance

If your drain line has an accessible cleanout or vent tee, a homeowner can pour a cup of plain white vinegar into it a few times a year with the system off. Clearing an existing clog with a vacuum, checking the trap and drain pan, and confirming overflow protection are part of a technician's maintenance visit.
