What is Gas Furnace?

A gas furnace is a heating appliance that burns natural gas or propane in a combustion chamber, passes the heat through a metal heat exchanger, and blows the warmed air through the home's ductwork. Combustion gases vent outdoors through a flue. Furnace efficiency is rated by AFUE, the percentage of fuel energy delivered to the home as usable heat.

Why it matters to you

In Greater Houston a gas furnace is usually paired with a central air conditioner, sharing the indoor blower and ductwork, and is often installed in a hot attic. Because it burns fuel inside your home, its venting and heat exchanger are a safety matter as well as a comfort one — and not every address has natural gas service.

Practical guidance

Change the filter on schedule and keep working carbon monoxide alarms in the home; EPA recommends a trained professional inspect, clean and tune central heating systems every year. Gas valves, burners and venting are never homeowner work, and if you smell gas, leave the house first and call from outside.
