What is Central Air Conditioner?

A central air conditioner is a whole-home cooling system that removes heat and humidity from indoor air and distributes cooled air through ductwork. It pairs an outdoor condensing unit with an indoor evaporator coil, connected by copper refrigerant lines, and is rated for efficiency in SEER2 and for capacity in tons or Btu per hour.

Why it matters to you

Houston (IAH) averages about 3,288 cooling degree days against 1,266 heating degree days a year, so central air does most of a Greater Houston home's comfort work and much of its humidity control. Federal rules set a 14.3 SEER2 minimum for new split air conditioners under 45,000 Btu/h installed in Texas and the rest of the Southeast.

Practical guidance

Homeowners can replace filters, keep supply and return vents clear, and keep the outdoor unit free of debris. Refrigerant, electrical and coil work belongs to a TDLR-licensed technician, and any Texas contractor's license can be checked on TDLR's public license search.
