What is Split System?

A split system is an air conditioner or heat pump whose components are divided between two cabinets: an outdoor condensing unit holding the compressor and condenser coil, and an indoor air handler or furnace holding the evaporator coil and blower. Insulated copper refrigerant lines and low-voltage control wiring connect the two halves.

Why it matters to you

Split systems are the common residential setup across Greater Houston, with the indoor half usually in an attic, closet or garage. The two halves are rated as a matched combination, so pairing a new outdoor unit with a mismatched indoor coil can cost capacity and efficiency.

Practical guidance

When replacing one half, ask whether the new outdoor unit and indoor coil are a rated matched combination and which refrigerant the new equipment uses; Goodman's current residential split systems use R-32. Refrigerant line and electrical work is for a licensed technician.
