What is Packaged Unit?

A packaged unit is a self-contained heating and cooling system that houses the compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil and blower in a single outdoor cabinet. Supply and return ducts connect directly to the cabinet, which sits on a ground pad or roof. Versions include packaged air conditioners, packaged heat pumps and gas-electric packaged units.

Why it matters to you

Packaged units suit homes and small commercial buildings without attic or closet space for an indoor air handler, and they are common as rooftop units on Greater Houston offices and retail buildings. Because every component sits outdoors, the whole system is exposed to sun, Gulf Coast humidity, storm debris and, on ground pads, flood water.

Practical guidance

Keep the cabinet clear of vegetation and debris and change the filter on schedule. After flooding or storm damage, have a licensed technician inspect the electrical and any gas components before the unit is restarted.
