What is Service Disconnect?

A service disconnect is the weatherproof electrical switch box mounted within sight of an outdoor air conditioner or heat pump that lets a technician cut power to the unit at the equipment. It may contain a pull-out block, fuses or a breaker, and electrical codes generally require one so equipment can be safely de-energized for service.

Why it matters to you

After widespread outages such as Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, some Greater Houston outdoor units would not restart because of tripped protection or storm-damaged parts. The disconnect is also where a technician isolates power before working on the capacitor or contactor.

Practical guidance

If the outdoor unit will not restart after an outage, wait several minutes, confirm the thermostat is on and set to cool, then call for service. Do not open the disconnect box, pull its block or replace its fuses yourself; a rusted or damaged disconnect should be replaced by a licensed technician.
