What is TXV (Thermostatic Expansion Valve)?

A TXV (thermostatic expansion valve) is a metering device at the evaporator coil inlet that controls how much liquid refrigerant enters the coil. A sensing bulb on the suction line opens or closes the valve to hold a target superheat, keeping the coil fully used as heat loads change. A fixed-orifice piston is the simpler alternative.

Why it matters to you

Greater Houston cooling loads swing from mild spring days to stretches of mid-90s summer highs, and a TXV adjusts refrigerant flow to match. A sticking or failed TXV can mimic a refrigerant leak, with poor cooling and an iced or warm coil, so accurate diagnosis matters before any refrigerant is added.

Practical guidance

Ask whether your indoor coil uses a TXV or a fixed orifice, and how the technician confirmed the diagnosis, typically with superheat and subcooling readings. TXV replacement requires refrigerant recovery and is work for an EPA Section 608-certified technician.
